Save The Date

Turns out that Riley is going to make an appearance sooner rather than later. We met with our Obstetrician last week to discuss many things but the one big thing that was on our minds was the date that Jess would be induced. What we were expecting was that the Obstetrician may have to consult with the Cardiologists, Midwives, Neonatal Specialists to make all the stars align so that the date works for everyone. This was not the case. He asked us point blank "So what date would you like?". His first suggestion was that Jess would get induced on the 7th January and Riley would be born the very next day. However that day also happens to be Jess' brother Caleb's birthday. He probably wouldn't have cared at all but we thought we would try to avoid Uncle/Niece combined birthday parties in the future by delaying it an extra day (Can you imagine the combination of birthday themes like Barbie/V8's or Peppa Pig/BBQ??).

In the end we came up with Jess being induced on January 8th and then all things going according to plan the birth will be on January 9th. This didn't turn out to be an issue for all the people involved. They will be prepared to go even if she decides to come early. It's in roughly two weeks, a crazy thought.

The rest of our week was taken up with tours of the PICU, Neonatal Unit, Birthing Unit and lots of appointments with Midwives and doctors to prepare us for whats to come. Throughout everything we have felt like we have had a good handle on what will happen during the birth and we were even prepared that directly after birth, Riley would be whisked away for tests leaving us without that all important first cuddle. Today however we got a little surprise as the Neonatal specialist was walking us through how the birth will go. She said all the things we have heard before from other doctors but there was one thing we hadn't heard before. There is potential that if the doctors believe Riley is breathing well immediately after birth then we may get to have a hold of her before they need to take her away for testing. Considering that is something we were not expecting and the fact that once Riley is in Neo-Natal care there really is no chance for a hold, this is big for us. We are just praying and believing it will happen.

Otherwise to everyone following our little adventure, we hope you have an amazing Christmas. We are going to be spending it with some friends; you wouldn't believe the amount of people that have asked us what we are doing for Christmas just to make sure we won't be alone. Its our last one just as the two of us (well two and a half really) so we are going to enjoy it while it lasts. Next year we will have an almost one year old trying to get into all the Christmas presents under the tree...

This update will be short and sweet... Things didn't go according to plan as you may well have noticed. We had our Thursday appointment with our doctor; we were quite confident that we would get the tick of approval to head back to Mackay. There were some signs that we shouldn't have been so confident; namely that Riley would wake up with a puffy face that wouldn't go away until close to mid-morning. He had flagged this upon her discharge last Monday and said that he would check in on it for her follow up appointments. He pulled up her Xray and it showed that there was an excess of fluid built up on her right side. The anticipated trip back home by the weekend was not to be. She would need to take extra medication to temper it and he would want to check in on her a few days later to see if it worked. If it hadn't we would be moving into getting a chest drain put back in which we all didn't want. He said there was not enough fluid there to warrant that option b...

One Down; Two To Go...

Across the weekend we have had many ups and downs. You have some good times, followed by some bad times, followed by something good... you get the picture. On Saturday we began to see a little bit of the old Riley back. As you could have probably guessed; her first few days post-surgery she would barely crack a smile. Why would you when you are uncomfortable, sore and every hour you have a nurse come either to prod you or to make you take medicines that you can barely keep down. Slowly but surely she began to gain back her personality. We took her for a walk this morning to where the toys are on the ward and it was so good to see her come alive again; using her imagination and enjoying herself once more. It has been sorely missed; there have been glimmers of her old self but it was almost like everything was normal again at play time.  But towards the afternoon today; Riley was a mess. Blame it on not getting enough sleep when she wants to because a nurse needs to do som...

Checking In

I write this blog entry as my little girl is happily sitting in a baby rocker being swung back and forth while her mother sleeps on the couch right next to her (exhausted from a day filled with visitors). Life has been good for our family lately. We spend the majority of our time seeing old friends or just sitting around at home either keeping Riley amused or trying to get her to have a nap (no matter how much she would rather be awake watching what everyone else is doing). But it’s amazing how you can’t even begin to rationally explain where your day went when you are looking after a baby, even when there are TWO people doing it. You try to break down in your head how 12 hours have gone by and you realize that it was taken up by so many little things. Changing nappies, feeding, bath time, changing the nappy again, reading to her, changing the nappy again, cradling her in your arms.... oh and did I mention changing her nappy? I did? Well while you contemplate my repetitiveness I...
