This update will be short and sweet...

Things didn't go according to plan as you may well have noticed. We had our Thursday appointment with our doctor; we were quite confident that we would get the tick of approval to head back to Mackay. There were some signs that we shouldn't have been so confident; namely that Riley would wake up with a puffy face that wouldn't go away until close to mid-morning.

He had flagged this upon her discharge last Monday and said that he would check in on it for her follow up appointments.

He pulled up her Xray and it showed that there was an excess of fluid built up on her right side. The anticipated trip back home by the weekend was not to be. She would need to take extra medication to temper it and he would want to check in on her a few days later to see if it worked. If it hadn't we would be moving into getting a chest drain put back in which we all didn't want. He said there was not enough fluid there to warrant that option but would have to keep an eye on it.

So if all they needed to do was a check up then we had a suggestion. Could she just get seen back home by her cardiologist who is visiting Mackay at the end of the next week? But when he was consulted; he agreed that we should stay put in Brisbane for the time being. Overall if I was being honest I felt better that we come back to Mackay without that hanging over our head.

Come today; we were a little more confident of a good report. Riley had been taking her medications and she was noticeably less puffy. We entered our appointment with a brand new Xray that showed the fluid had gone down and they now could join us in our confidence about heading home.

Although I love the beautiful view of Southbank and the river from our balcony; we are very excited to get back to normal life. We've packed, our flights are booked and we head back to Mackay late tonight!

Surprises

Some of you may know this and some of you may not but we have a very special little girl. We haven't met her yet, haven't even gotten a hold but we know that she is special. We got our first glimpse of her when she was only eight weeks old, at that time she looked more like a blob. Not human-like at all. But we knew she was was going to grow into someone beautiful. Our next glimpse was at twelve weeks then twenty week mark, we were looking forward to this scan because we had always planned to find out what gender our baby was. We didn't like (or more like probably I didn't like) having to wait and see, at least we could start preparing. What we were not prepared for was that the sonographer struggled to get a good look at the heart; she got Jess to take a walk, move all around, come back a few times until she got a very good look and I am thankful that she did. She let us know that she had concerns about what she was seeing and decided to let another sonographer ...

The Pretend Patient

When I first started this blog there was so much to write about, in fact I think there was a period there where I would write every second day because so much was happening. Currently that is not the case. Riley has been given a nickname by the doctors and nurses that is beginning to stick; they keep referring to her as “the pretend patient”. All those drugs she needed to take? She is down to only one and it’s aspirin. All those stats they needed to get from her every few hours? They don’t even do it overnight anymore and aren’t concerned. At least any feeding or changing nappies? Well we do all of that so they don’t need to. If you are a nurse on the cardiac ward, you will barely have anything to do for Riley. The doctors come in for their rounds every day and it is turning into a time to have small talk with us because there is nothing about Riley to discuss. You can understand why there has been a push for Jess and I to take her to our accommodation full-time. Unfortunately th...
