It's been a little while...

Over the past few weeks we have been getting everything in order for the next season of our lives. Recently we got the chance to visit Brisbane once again, this time not for scans or tests but for a holiday. We decided to use it as a time to get a sneak peek at where we might be living and also look at everything that would be nearby. Thankfully we saw immediately that Southbank is a very quick walk from the Hospital with pools, a fake beach, lots of eateries etc. This will come in handy as we have to go a full month before the due date and with neither of us working during that time we will have a LOT of free time on our hands. We also got to catch up with some old friends and found a church that we are thinking we will go to. All in all we feel like our time in Brisbane will be good and with visits every now and then from friends and family, it will stem the feeling of homesickness we are bound to feel.

Riley has even become more active lately as well, she seems to kick and move around all the time. Jess moves between loving it to being very frustrated with it especially when she is trying to get a good night's sleep. When I pray for her every night I place my hand on Jess' belly and everytime without fail she seems to kick right where my hand is. I like to think that she is giving me a high-five with her foot (she's young, she will soon learn you use your hand) and agreeing with me that she is going to be a healthy little girl.

Today we got a positive report! We had a scan that checked how Riley is growing because sometimes in these situations the babies can be underweight which is the last thing you would want around surgery time. The sonographer measured her and found her to be measuring a week ahead of where she should normally be and is right on track. (Jess blames my genetic contribution for that. We spoke with a midwife yesterday who said Riley has no chance of being a small girl with a dad like me) It was interesting to see the Sonographer's reaction to Riley's heart, she didn't quite know what to make of it because she had never seen one like it before. Oh and for all of you who still believe that they may have gotten the gender wrong, DEFINITELY a girl. Below is a little video of her face from the scan.  Must say we both think the ultrasound makes her look a little creepy at times but then there is those quick seconds where you see a beautiful baby girl...

Our next step will be another scan at 30 weeks which is in 2 weeks time to once again check that she is growing at the right rate. We are feeling very reassured that everyone is keeping a close eye on her and we are in good hands. Right now we are just enjoying our last couple of months of our normal life before the big move. Will update again soon!

One Down; Two To Go...

Across the weekend we have had many ups and downs. You have some good times, followed by some bad times, followed by something good... you get the picture. On Saturday we began to see a little bit of the old Riley back. As you could have probably guessed; her first few days post-surgery she would barely crack a smile. Why would you when you are uncomfortable, sore and every hour you have a nurse come either to prod you or to make you take medicines that you can barely keep down. Slowly but surely she began to gain back her personality. We took her for a walk this morning to where the toys are on the ward and it was so good to see her come alive again; using her imagination and enjoying herself once more. It has been sorely missed; there have been glimmers of her old self but it was almost like everything was normal again at play time.  But towards the afternoon today; Riley was a mess. Blame it on not getting enough sleep when she wants to because a nurse needs to do som...

Home

This update will be short and sweet... Things didn't go according to plan as you may well have noticed. We had our Thursday appointment with our doctor; we were quite confident that we would get the tick of approval to head back to Mackay. There were some signs that we shouldn't have been so confident; namely that Riley would wake up with a puffy face that wouldn't go away until close to mid-morning. He had flagged this upon her discharge last Monday and said that he would check in on it for her follow up appointments. He pulled up her Xray and it showed that there was an excess of fluid built up on her right side. The anticipated trip back home by the weekend was not to be. She would need to take extra medication to temper it and he would want to check in on her a few days later to see if it worked. If it hadn't we would be moving into getting a chest drain put back in which we all didn't want. He said there was not enough fluid there to warrant that option b...

Checking In

I write this blog entry as my little girl is happily sitting in a baby rocker being swung back and forth while her mother sleeps on the couch right next to her (exhausted from a day filled with visitors). Life has been good for our family lately. We spend the majority of our time seeing old friends or just sitting around at home either keeping Riley amused or trying to get her to have a nap (no matter how much she would rather be awake watching what everyone else is doing). But it’s amazing how you can’t even begin to rationally explain where your day went when you are looking after a baby, even when there are TWO people doing it. You try to break down in your head how 12 hours have gone by and you realize that it was taken up by so many little things. Changing nappies, feeding, bath time, changing the nappy again, reading to her, changing the nappy again, cradling her in your arms.... oh and did I mention changing her nappy? I did? Well while you contemplate my repetitiveness I...
